There are 3 main areas in the metal working Industry:
– Machine-tools
– Sheet metal machines
– Foundry/ presses
Machining is a form of manufacturing, in which a collection of material-working processes utilizing power-driven machine tools, such as saws, lathes, milling machines, and drilling machines.
Machining is a part of the manufacture of many metal products, but it can also be used on materials such as wood, plastic, ceramic, and composites.
Here is an overview of the main categories of machine tools and their definition:
Definition of turning machines
A cutting tool with a single cutting edge is used to remove material from a rotating workpiece to generate a cylindrical shape. The speed motion is provided by rotating the workpiece, and the feed motion is achieved by moving the cutting tool slowly in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
Definition of boring machines
A tool with a single bent pointed tip is advanced into a roughly made hole in a spinning workpiece to slightly enlarge the hole and improve its accuracy.
It is a fine finishing operation used in the final stages of product manufacture.
Definition of drilling machines
It is used to create a round hole. It is accomplished by a rotating tool that typically has two or four helical cutting edges.
The tool is fed in a direction parallel to its axis of rotation into the workpiece to form the round hole.
Definition of milling machines
A rotating tool with multiple cutting edges is moved slowly relative to the material to generate a plane or straight surface. The direction of the feed motion is perpendicular to the tool’s axis of rotation.
The speed motion is provided by the rotating milling cutter. The two basic forms of milling are:
– Peripheral milling
– Face milling
Definition of sawing machines
A tool that uses a hard blade, wire, or chain with a toothed edge to cut through softer materials. A saw may be worked by hand, or powered by steam, water, electricity or other power.
Definition of shaping machines
A material removal process in which a cutting tool takes mass and shapes a stationary object to produce a sculpted or plane surface.
Definition of grinding machines
It is a type of machining using an abrasive wheel as the cutting tool. Each grain of abrasive on the wheel’s surface cuts a small chip from the workpiece via shear deformation.
Definition of Electric discharge machining (EDM)
Sometimes colloquially also referred to as spark machining, spark eroding, burning, die sinking or wire erosion, is a manufacturing process whereby a desired shape is obtained using electrical discharges (sparks). Material is removed from the workpiece by a series of rapidly recurring current discharges between two electrodes, separated by a dielectric liquid and subject to an electric voltage.
One of the electrodes is called the tool-electrode, or simply the ‘tool’ or ‘electrode’, while the other is called the workpiece-electrode, or ‘workpiece’.
